FAQ - What is the Islands Trust Fund

What is the Islands Trust Fund?

The Islands Trust Fund is a regional land trust.  We protect natural landscapes in Canada's islands in the Salish Sea - a special area encompassing  some of the most endangered ecosystems in Canada.  By permanently protecting  natural environments, either as nature reserves or conservation covenants, we are ensuring these treasured islands remain beautiful, resilient and diverse - forever.  Our vision is to create a network of protected areas in the islands so that Canada's Salish Sea is a vibrant tapestry of culture and ecology, and where viable ecosystems flourish alongside healthy island communities.

The Islands Trust Fund achieves its mission by:
  • Working with landowners to protect ecosystems on private property
  • Building a strong conservation alliance in the islands by supporting local island conservancies, and
  • Demonstrating the highest standards of land stewardship in our nature reserves.
The Islands Trust Fund is a qualified donee as defined by the Income Tax Act.  We issue tax receipts for income tax purposes to individuals who donate land or cash to be used for conservation.   The Islands Trust Fund is governed by the Trust Fund Board, which is legally independent from the Islands Trust.

Common misconception: the Islands Trust and Islands Trust Fund is the same thing

The Islands Trust Fund is not the same as the Islands Trust.  Although established by the same legislation - the Islands Trust Act - the Islands Trust Fund is a land trust whereas the Islands Trust is a local government regulating land use on the islands.

Common misconception: the Islands Trust Fund is a bank

Despite the "Fund" in our name, the Islands Trust Fund is not a financial institution or bank.  The Islands Trust Fund holds money and land for the sole purpose of ecosystem conservation, and must fundraise for projects like any other land trust.
